Our oldest has a new nickname. Here and in real life. Thane. It fits him. We love it.

See, when Thane first came home we knew we would be keeping his Congolese name as his second name, we knew he would be given my father’s name as his third name, and of course the last one is our family name. But his first name we didn’t know. We had it narrowed down to three. And then he came home. And none of them fit. What did fit was a surprise to us – my husband’s name. Nathanael. It fit him perfectly. Still does.

And since my husband goes by Nate we decided to call him Nat. It was perfect. It was adorable. It was beyond confusing. Add to this confusion the fact that I and most of our family still call him by his nickname that’s based on his Congolese name, and I also call him his full Congolese name, and I found I had no idea what to answer when people asked what his name was. Now he, on the other hand, was never confused. He’ll answer to any and all of the above.

So Nat is now Thane. It’s perfect. We love it. We’ll try not to change it on all of you again.
